Lenskart breaks ground for world's largest eyewear manufacturing plant in Hyderabad

The Times of India

Less than three months after it inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government for investing Rs 1,500 crore in eyewear manufacturing, Lenskart broke ground for the world’s largest eyewear facility at Tukkuguda on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Thursday.
The factory, just like the unicorn’s manufacturing facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, is planned to be “an integrated facility with capabilities across all aspects of the manufacturing process including frame, lens and eyewear manufacturing,” Lenskart said.

The upcoming Hyderabad facility will cater to not just the domestic market but exports to markets as well. “This facility will play a pivotal role in expanding Lenskart’s manufacturing capacity, catering to India, Asia, and the Middle East,” Lenskart said on Thursday.

Lenskart co-founder Amit Chaudhary broke ground for the project in the presence of Telangana industries minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu on Thursday.
During the MoU signing on December 8, 2024, Chaudhary had told TOI that the first phase of the facility, which will be spread over 50 acres and will create over 2,100 jobs, is expected to become operational by 2025 end and will eventually have a capacity to manufacture over 2 lakh glasses per day once fully operational.

The facility will also be designed to have a “high degree of automation for strict adherence to the company’s quality principles within their efficient supply chain network and facilitating the provision of high-quality eyewear globally”, Lenskart said.

In a statement issued on the occasion, Lenskart CEO & co-founder Peyush Bansal said: “Today’s ground-breaking is an important moment for us at Lenskart, as we continue to power the future of eyewear globally through technology and innovation. We believe that this facility will not only enable us to meet the growing demand for eyewear but also create new opportunities.”

The mega facility is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Telangana government and Lenskart Solutions Pvt Ltd, headquartered in Gurugram, Telangana govt said.

According to the state government, which literally whisked the project away from Karnataka, said the investment underscores Telangana’s growing influence as a preferred destination for global industries, paving the way for advanced manufacturing and international trade.

“This new facility is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and bolster Telangana’s reputation as a global hub for high-tech manufacturing. Cutting-edge technology and precision engineering will be at the core of this world-class plant, ensuring superior quality and innovation in eyewear production,” Sridhar Babu’s office said.
